Overview
Tricentis, a leader in automated testing, is best known for Tosca, a powerful tool for automating web, desktop, mobile, and API applications. However, Tosca’s complexity often limits accessibility to developers, making it challenging for a wider audience to adopt.
Model-Based Testing (MBT) solves this by offering a codeless, scalable approach that enables 90%+ automation, increasing test reusability and efficiency across industries like finance, healthcare, and telecom.
Problem
Traditional test automation was complex, code-heavy, and inaccessible to non-technical users like test analysts and business analysts. Tools like Tricentis Tosca favored developers, limiting adoption and slowing automation efforts.
A codeless, intuitive solution was needed to empower non-technical users, streamline testing, and increase automation coverage without relying on coding expertise.
Goals
To design a codeless, user-friendly test automation solution that empowers non-technical users to create, execute, and analyze tests effortlessly. By simplifying automation, the goal is to increase adoption, reduce reliance on developers, and accelerate testing efficiency, making high automation coverage accessible to all. 🚀
Solution
To make test automation accessible to non-technical users, we designed a codeless, visual test automation platform that simplifies the process while maintaining flexibility and scalability.
Key Features:
✅ Drag-and-Drop Test Flow Builder – Allows users to create automated test scenarios without coding.
✅ Support for UI, API, and Database Testing – Enables seamless automation across different layers of the application.
✅ Modular and Reusable Components – Speeds up test creation with pre-configured blocks, reducing redundancy.
✅ Intuitive Interface – A left-side panel offers actions and reusable components, while a right-side panel provides fine-tuned configuration controls.
This codeless, scalable approach empowers test analysts and business users, reducing reliance on developers and significantly improving automation efficiency. 🚀
Process
As the sole UX Designer of this project, my challenge was clear - make test automation accessible to everyone, not just developers.
I started by talking to real users: test analysts, business analysts, and QA teams, understanding their struggles with complex automation tools. They wanted something simple, visual, and intuitive.
With that in mind, I designed a drag-and-drop Test Flow Builder, creating wireframes and prototypes that let users build automated tests without writing a single line of code.
Testing with non-technical users was key. I observed how they interacted with the tool, refined the design, and improved navigation to make everything seamless.
Working closely with developers and product teams, I ensured the final product stayed true to our vision -> a powerful yet effortless automation tool.
Results
✅ 85% reduction in regression testing time, saving $344,000+ in testing costs.
✅ 4x faster test creation compared to traditional code-based methods.
✅ WCAG-compliant redesign, making the platform accessible for all users.
✅ Accelerated testing cycles, reducing feedback loops and speeding up delivery.
✅ Higher accuracy, fewer defects, thanks to expanded automation coverage.
✅ Parallel testing across multiple environments (Dev, UAT, SIT), boosting efficiency. 🚀
